Liminal Worlds
Hudson Valley Visions is part of a larger project to connect and network a wide diversity of individuals, groups and projects. Liminal Worlds is what might be called the hub of a growing group of sites dedicated to this. Liminal or liminality refers to the state of emergence or a state that is in between other things, such as on a border or boundary. While this may sound vague, it's actually a pretty good description of many aspects of our postmodern culture. The concept of liminality was first used in academic circles, especially anthropology, to describe certain states, such as rituals, where participants hovered in between worlds, states or phases. For example, traditional initiation ceremonies where children become adults. Another widely occurring instance of liminality is the state between life and death, as when people journey to Hades. Certain figures in myth are especially liminal, such as Hermes, who has been recognized as a messenger and also a guide for souls after death. In what might be considered the postmodern context, the liminal can refer to intellectual, cultural or aesthetic movements that have not yet "arrived" to the mainstream -some may never do so. In this manner, the liminal overlaps with the bohemian and the avant garde. Liminal Worlds
